SUMMARY:Cedric Watson
DESCRIPTION:Roots Concerts presents\nCedric Watson\nSponsored by Appalachian State University English Dept.\, The Hoppin’ John Festival\, Shakori Hills\, The Center for the Study of the American South (CSAS)\, UNC-Chapel Hill. \nTuesday\, September 16\, 2025 at 7 p.m. / Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Mast Store Community Room\nDonations Welcomed. Suggested donations: $5 Students / $20 Standard General Admission All Ages\nCedric Watson is one of the brightest young talents to emerge in Cajun\, Creole and Zydeco (Louisiana French) music over the last decade\, Cedric Watson is a four-time Grammy-nominated fiddler\, singer\, accordionist & songwriter with seemingly unlimited potential. A master of Cajun and Creole fiddle styles\, Cedric Watson is a living library of knowledge—not only about the music that put Lafayette on the map\, but also about the very instrument that started it all. In his engaging workshops\, both participants and audience members receive a crash course in South Louisiana fiddling through Cedric’s dynamic solo performances\, interactive audience participation\, and rich storytelling. His deep understanding of Louisiana culture\, language\, and history shines through in every session\, as he weaves in fascinating trivia and anecdotes that highlight what makes Bayou State music so distinctive. \nOriginally from San Felipe\, TX (population 868)\, Cedric made his first appearance at the age of 19 at the Zydeco Jam at The Big Easy in Houston\, TX. Just two years later\, he moved to south Louisiana\, quickly immersing himself in French music and language. Over the next several years\, Cedric performed French music in 17 countries and on 7 full-length albums with various groups\, including the Pine Leaf Boys\, Corey Ledet\, Les Amis Creole with Ed Poullard and J.B. Adams\, and with his own group\, Bijou Creole. \nCedric Watson & Bijou Creole resurrect the ancient sounds of the French and Spanish contra dance and bourré alongside the spiritual rhythms of the Congo tribes of West Africa\, who were sold as slaves in the Carribean and Louisiana by the French and Spanish. \nWith an apparently bottomless repertoire of songs at his fingertips\, Cedric plays everything from forgotten Creole melodies and obscure Dennis McGee reels to more modern Cajun and Zydeco songs\, even occasionally throwing in a bluegrass fiddle tune or an old string band number. Unlike many of his contemporaries\, he is also a prolific songwriter\, writing almost all of his songs on his double row Hohner accordion. Cedric’s songs channel his diverse ancestry (African\, French\, Native American and Spanish) to create his own brand of sounds.

SUMMARY:American Coup: Wilmington 1898
DESCRIPTION:Oresented by App Docs\, and Appalachian State University’s Departments of Interdisciplinary Studies\, History\, and Sociology\, in partnership with PBS North Carolina and Working Films.\nAmerican Coup: Wilmington 1898\nTuesday\, September 16\, 2025 at 7 p.m. \nFREE – General Admission Doors open at 6:15 p.m. \n\n\n\nAll Ages (children under 17 admitted with parent/legal guardian) \nAmerican Coup: Wilmington 1898 – The film shares the little-known story of a deadly race massacre and carefully orchestrated insurrection in North Carolina’s largest city\, Wilmington\, in 1898. The screening is part of a statewide effort to share the story of the massacre\, its place in US history\, and its lasting impact. \nThe screening of the film will be followed by a panel discussion. \n“American Coup: Wilmington 1898” documents this story\, which was the only successful coup d’état in the history of the US. Stoking fears of “Negro Rule\,” self-described white supremacists used intimidation and violence to destroy Black political and economic power and overthrow Wilmington’s democratically elected\, multi-racial government. Black residents were murdered\, and thousands were banished. The story of what happened in Wilmington was suppressed for decades until descendants and scholars began to investigate. Today\, many of those descendants — Black and white — seek the truth about this intentionally buried history. \n“American Coup: Wilmington 1898 is a cautionary tale about a breakdown of a cornerstone of our democracy: fair and free elections\,” says Rachel Raney\, PBS North Carolina’s Director of National Productions and co-executive producer of the film. “When we started researching these events in Wilmington\, we quickly discovered that many North Carolinians are not aware of this important history\, in part because it was intentionally buried. The more we learned\, the more it became clear that all Americans need to know what happened.” \nFor more information\, visit www.workingfilms.org. and learn more about PBS North Carolina\, visit www.pbsnc.org
