SUMMARY:Napoleon Dynamite LIVE
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 19\, 2025 at 7 PM / Doors open at 6:15 PM\nVIP – $104.61 (includes Premium seating plus Meet & Greet experience) PREMIUM – $51.24 STANDARD – $40.56 \nAll Ages (children under 17 admitted with parent/legal guardian)\nAll Seating is Reserved.\n*AppTheatre inclusive pricing combines fees\, tax\, and ticket value at checkout. \nNapoleon Dynamite\, Live! – This unique evening includes a full screening of “Napoleon Dynamite” followed by a lively\, freewheeling\, moderated discussion with fan-favorite cast members; Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite)\, Efren Ramirez (Pedro) and Jon Gries (Uncle Rico). \nThe beloved indie classic Napoleon Dynamite was released 22 years ago. Since then much has changed; but the characters\, as enduring as they are endearing\, stay in our hearts. Appealing to the inner-teenager in each of us\, the story\, and more importantly the dialogue\, makes “Napoleon Dynamite” one of the most quoted movies of our time. \nNapoleon Dynamite – In small-town Preston\, Idaho\, awkward teen Napoleon Dynamite has trouble fitting in. After his grandmother is injured in an accident\, his life is made even worse when his strangely nostalgic uncle\, Rico\, shows up to keep an eye on him. With no safe haven at home or at school\, Napoleon befriends the new kid\, Pedro\, a morose Hispanic boy who speaks little English. Together the two launch a campaign to run for class president.

SUMMARY:American Coup: Wilmington 1898
DESCRIPTION:Oresented by App Docs\, and Appalachian State University’s Departments of Interdisciplinary Studies\, History\, and Sociology\, in partnership with PBS North Carolina and Working Films.\nAmerican Coup: Wilmington 1898\nTuesday\, September 16\, 2025 at 7 p.m. \nFREE – General Admission Doors open at 6:15 p.m. \n\n\n\nAll Ages (children under 17 admitted with parent/legal guardian) \nAmerican Coup: Wilmington 1898 – The film shares the little-known story of a deadly race massacre and carefully orchestrated insurrection in North Carolina’s largest city\, Wilmington\, in 1898. The screening is part of a statewide effort to share the story of the massacre\, its place in US history\, and its lasting impact. \nThe screening of the film will be followed by a panel discussion. \n“American Coup: Wilmington 1898” documents this story\, which was the only successful coup d’état in the history of the US. Stoking fears of “Negro Rule\,” self-described white supremacists used intimidation and violence to destroy Black political and economic power and overthrow Wilmington’s democratically elected\, multi-racial government. Black residents were murdered\, and thousands were banished. The story of what happened in Wilmington was suppressed for decades until descendants and scholars began to investigate. Today\, many of those descendants — Black and white — seek the truth about this intentionally buried history. \n“American Coup: Wilmington 1898 is a cautionary tale about a breakdown of a cornerstone of our democracy: fair and free elections\,” says Rachel Raney\, PBS North Carolina’s Director of National Productions and co-executive producer of the film. “When we started researching these events in Wilmington\, we quickly discovered that many North Carolinians are not aware of this important history\, in part because it was intentionally buried. The more we learned\, the more it became clear that all Americans need to know what happened.” \nFor more information\, visit www.workingfilms.org. and learn more about PBS North Carolina\, visit www.pbsnc.org

SUMMARY:Cedric Watson
DESCRIPTION:Roots Concerts presents\nCedric Watson\nSponsored by Appalachian State University English Dept.\, The Hoppin’ John Festival\, Shakori Hills\, The Center for the Study of the American South (CSAS)\, UNC-Chapel Hill. \nTuesday\, September 16\, 2025 at 7 p.m. / Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Mast Store Community Room\nDonations Welcomed. Suggested donations: $5 Students / $20 Standard General Admission All Ages\nCedric Watson is one of the brightest young talents to emerge in Cajun\, Creole and Zydeco (Louisiana French) music over the last decade\, Cedric Watson is a four-time Grammy-nominated fiddler\, singer\, accordionist & songwriter with seemingly unlimited potential. A master of Cajun and Creole fiddle styles\, Cedric Watson is a living library of knowledge—not only about the music that put Lafayette on the map\, but also about the very instrument that started it all. In his engaging workshops\, both participants and audience members receive a crash course in South Louisiana fiddling through Cedric’s dynamic solo performances\, interactive audience participation\, and rich storytelling. His deep understanding of Louisiana culture\, language\, and history shines through in every session\, as he weaves in fascinating trivia and anecdotes that highlight what makes Bayou State music so distinctive. \nOriginally from San Felipe\, TX (population 868)\, Cedric made his first appearance at the age of 19 at the Zydeco Jam at The Big Easy in Houston\, TX. Just two years later\, he moved to south Louisiana\, quickly immersing himself in French music and language. Over the next several years\, Cedric performed French music in 17 countries and on 7 full-length albums with various groups\, including the Pine Leaf Boys\, Corey Ledet\, Les Amis Creole with Ed Poullard and J.B. Adams\, and with his own group\, Bijou Creole. \nCedric Watson & Bijou Creole resurrect the ancient sounds of the French and Spanish contra dance and bourré alongside the spiritual rhythms of the Congo tribes of West Africa\, who were sold as slaves in the Carribean and Louisiana by the French and Spanish. \nWith an apparently bottomless repertoire of songs at his fingertips\, Cedric plays everything from forgotten Creole melodies and obscure Dennis McGee reels to more modern Cajun and Zydeco songs\, even occasionally throwing in a bluegrass fiddle tune or an old string band number. Unlike many of his contemporaries\, he is also a prolific songwriter\, writing almost all of his songs on his double row Hohner accordion. Cedric’s songs channel his diverse ancestry (African\, French\, Native American and Spanish) to create his own brand of sounds.

SUMMARY:Antlers and Acorns: John Moreland with Mando Saenz
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 13\, 2025 at 7 PM / Doors open at 6:15 PM\nStandard – $45 \nAll Ages (children under 17 admitted with parent/legal guardian)\nAll Seating is Reserved.\nSales tax and fees applied at checkout \nJohn Moreland – After an impressive 2010s run of albums that earned him a devoted fanbase\, accolades from outlets like The New York Times\, Fresh Air\, and Pitchfork\, and a place in the upper echelon of modern Americana singer-songwriters\, John Moreland has already taken two unexpected turns this decade\, both of which highlight his fierce artistic independence. First\, he released a brilliant and sonically layered folk-electronica meditation on modern alienation\, 2022’s Birds In The Ceiling\, that took some of his fans by surprise. Then\, after wrapping up a difficult tour behind that record in November 2022\, he stopped working entirely. He took an entire year off from playing shows and didn’t use a smartphone for 6 months. “At the end of that year\, I was just like ‘Nobody call me’. I needed to not do anything for a while and just process\,” Moreland says. After nearly a decade in the limelight\, constantly jostled by the expectations of his audience\, the music industry\, and anonymous strangers online\, he carved out some time to rest\, heal\, and reflect for the first time. \nMando Saenz – Every once in a while\, a veteran artist manages to tap into a new creative wellspring\, discovers an exciting sound\, and the floodgates open. Such was the case for Mando Saenz on his latest release\, All My Shame. On this dynamic new album\, Saenz fully embraces his pop and classic rock influences for the first time in his career – while still staying true to his Texas songwriting roots. It’s a bold new statement for the Nashville-based artist\, and the culmination of his career as a journeyman writer and musician.

SUMMARY:Antlers and Acorns: Voices in the Round- Listen to Women
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 13\, 2025 at 2 PM / Doors open at 1:15 PM\nStandard – $25 \nAll Ages (children under 17 admitted with parent/legal guardian)\nAll Seating is Reserved.\nSales tax and fees applied at checkout \nMary Gauthier\, Jaimee Harris\, Jess Klein\, and Leslie Mendelson together on the stage of the Appalachian Theatre sharing songs for one glorious show. \nMary Gauthier – “With songwriting as powerful as hers\, there’s no need to go looking for qualifiers. She’s a unique\, intrinsically valuable musical voice. And there’s never a surplus of those.” — Randy Lewis\, Los Angeles Time \nMary’s songs have been recorded by dozens of artists\, including Jimmy Buffett\, Dolly Parton\, Boy George\, Blake Shelton\, Tim McGraw\, Bettye Lavette\, Mike Farris\, Kathy Mattea\, Bobby Bare\, Amy Helm and Candi Staton and have appeared extensively in Film and Television\, most recently on HBO TV’s Yellowstone. \nJaimee Harris – Harris turned 30 during the pandemic. It’s a milestone that is a rite of passage even during normal times. But for this Texas-born singer-songwriter\, it came in the midst of one of the strangest and most tumultuous periods in American history. When the world stopped during lockdown\, Harris\, like many others\, found herself gazing back into the past\, ruminating on the nature of her hometown and family origins\, and reckoning with their imprint on her. The term ‘nostalgia’ derives from the Greek words nostos (return) and algos (pain)\, and if Harris’s Boomerang Town can be regarded as a nostalgic album\, it is only nostalgic in the sense that the longing for home is a desire to return to the past and heal old wounds. \nJess Klein – Jess’s live shows are known for their intimate and soulful atmosphere. Whether solo with just her guitar or backed by a band\, Jess performs with a raw\, emotional intensity.  Her emotive vocals\, and poignant storytelling invite her fans on a journey through themes of love\, loss\, and resilience. \nThe Bluegrass Situation hails Jess’s work as “one part grassroots social activism\, two parts alt-country guitar rock — a combo we can certainly get behind.” Klein’s newest album\, 2023’s When We Rise\, harnesses this potent combination with themes of empowerment and the joy of overcoming set to a dynamic and deeply introspective roots-inflected soundtrack. \nLeslie Mendelson – With her enchanted voice and evocative songwriting\, Leslie Mendelson has won the hearts and minds of both an adoring fanbase and fellow artists alike. No less than Jackson Browne has declared\, “Leslie’s melodies are timeless. They reach me way back in my youth somewhere. I hear traces of Burt Bacharach and Carole King\, and hooks and passages that remind me of the pop songs I grew up hearing on the radio\,” while The Wallflowers frontman Jakob Dylan shares: “Voices like Leslie’s can get away with almost anything. Along with being a great songwriter\, this leaves her with few if any peers.”

SUMMARY:Antlers and Acorns: Mary Gauthier with Jess Klein
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 12\, 2025 at 7 PM / Doors open at 6:15 PM\nStandard – $45 \nAll Ages (children under 17 admitted with parent/legal guardian)\nAll Seating is Reserved.\nSales tax and fees applied at checkout \nBack for the third time to Antlers & Acorns\, Mary Gauthier is a Grammy-nominated American folk singer/songwriter and author whose dark atmospheres and tales of marginalized people draw on her early experiences with addiction and recovery and growing up gay in Southern Louisiana. She made her initial mark in 1999 following her self-released sophomore effort\, Drag Queens in Limousines\, which had critics comparing her self-described “country noir” to the likes of Townes Van Zandt\, Steve Earle\, John Prine\, and Lucinda Williams. The success of the LP led to main-stage shows at festivals around the country and eventually the world\, followed by a string of well-received albums. In 2018 she released the acclaimed Rifles & Rosary Beads\, which she co-wrote with military veterans and their families\, and in 2021 she published the memoir Saved by a Song. Dark Enough to See the Stars\, Gauthier’s 11th studio effort\, appeared the following year. \nEmbraced by critics\, folkies\, and No Depression fans alike\, Gauthier’s warmly candid treatment of her fringe-dwelling subjects rings true — it never verges on sentimental — her characters’ downtrodden lives are never coldly exploited. Instead\, these are people she knows\, whom she met after dropping out of her Louisiana high school and stealing the family car at the age of 15\, only to find herself in detox at 16 and jailed in Kansas City at 18. Her own wayward path led her to culinary school and\, eventually\, she opened a successful restaurant in Boston’s Back Bay — Dixie Kitchen — which she sold after her music career started to take off. \nJess Klein came to this world to pull firebrand power and childlike joy from our darkest shadows. Her acoustic-driven\, hook-laden story songs revel in the polychrome of human experience – joy\, rage\, sensuality and resilience. The New York Times calls her “A songwriter with a voice of unblinking tenacity.” \nJess has toured the globe performing in pin-drop listening rooms\, cozy theaters and at raucous festivals in front of tens of thousands of fans.  She has toured nationally and internationally supporting Arlo Guthrie\, Josh Ritter\, Damien Dempsey\, John Fullbright and Jonathan Byrd and has opened for such legends as Ani DiFranco\, Steve Earle and Alejandro Escovedo.  Jess has appeared on Good Morning America and NPR’s All Things Considered and has performed at the Newport\, Winnipeg\, Falcon Ridge and Philadelphia Folk Festivals as well as Fuji Rock Festival in Japan. \nJess’s live shows are known for their intimate and soulful atmosphere.

SUMMARY:Antlers and Acorns: Ordinary Elephant
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, September 12\, 2025 at 2 PM / Doors open at 1:15 PM\nStandard – $25 \nAll Ages (children under 17 admitted with parent/legal guardian)\nAll Seating is Reserved.\nSales tax and fees applied at checkout \nMesmerizing folk duo Ordinary Elephant has spent the better part of the last decade on a never-ending tour that’s earned married couple Crystal and Pete Damore widespread critical acclaim and made fans of luminaries like Tom Paxton and Mary Gauthier. In 2017\, the pair took home the International Folk Music Award for Artist of the Year on the strength of their breakout album\, Before I Go\, and two years later\, they returned with the similarly lauded Honest\, which the Associated Press hailed as “one of the best Americana albums of the year.” \nThe band’s new stripped-down\, self-titled collection is the purest distillation of their sound yet\, showcasing the arresting power of the couple’s gorgeous harmonies and intricate fretwork. The songs are timeless\, rooted in rich\, character-driven storytelling\, and the performances are similarly transportive\, fueled by delicately intertwined banjo\, guitar\, and octave mandolin. Though the songs were born out of a period of deep uncertainty\, the record itself is a work of profound self-assurance\, one delivered by a duo whose personal and professional lives embody the limitless possibility of honest\, organic collaboration. Press play on Ordinary Elephant and you’ll hear more than just a husband and wife; you’ll hear the sound of sincerity and commitment\, of patience and gratitude\, of learning to let go of expectation and revel in the simple beauty of the moment.

SUMMARY:Antlers and Acorns: Darrell Scott with Ben Danaher
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 11\, 2025 at 7 PM / Doors open at 6:15 PM\nStandard – $45\nMulti-Instrumentalist and Singer-Songwriter Darrell Scott mines and cultivates the everyday moment\, taking the rote\, menial\, mundane\, and allowing it to be surreal\, ever poignant\, and candidly honest\, lilting\, blooming\, and resonating. The words he fosters allow us to make sense of the world\, what is at stake here\, and our place in it. And ultimately\, Darrell knows the sole truth of life is that love is all that matters\, that we don’t always get it right\, but that’s the instinctive and requisite circuitous allure of things\, why we forever chase it\, and why it is held sacred. \nDarrell Scott comes from a musical family with a father who had him smitten with guitars by the age of 4\, alongside a brother who played Jerry Reed style as well. From there\, things only ramped up with literature and poetry endeavors while a student at Tufts University\, along with playing his way through life. This would never change. \nAfter touring with Robert Plant and Zac Brown Band (2 years with each)\, and producing albums for Malcolm Holcombe and Guy Clark and being named “songwriter of the year” for both ASCAP and NSAI\, these days find him roaming his Tennessee wilderness acreage hiking along the small river\, creating delicious meals with food raised on his property\, and playing music. He often leads songwriting workshops to help people tell their own truths with their stories\, and is as busy as always writing\, producing\, performing\, and just plain fully immersing himself in life. \nNashville Songwriters Hall of Fame Nominee 2023 / Grammy Nomination\, Best Country Song – “Long Time Gone” The Chicks 2003 Grammy Nomination / Best Country Instrumental Performance – “The Second Mouse” 2001 / Americana Music Association Song of the Year – “Hank Williams’ Ghost” 2007 /\nRolling Stone Magazine – Theatre of the Unheard\, 2003 Critics Top Albums / ASCAP Songwriter of the Year 2002 / NSAI Songwriter of the Year 2001 \nSongs recorded by over 70 artists including: The Chicks\, Keb’ Mo’\, Faith Hill\, Guy Clark\, Sam Bush\, Maura O’Connell\, Kathy Mattea\, Brad Paisley\, Sara Evans\, Garth Brooks\, Patty Loveless\, Trace Adkins\, Tim McGraw …\nRecorded With: Steve Earle\, Kate Rusby\, Joan Baez\, Jim Lauderdale\, Jimmie Dale Gilmore\, Jon Pousette-Dart\, Ginny Hawker\, Malcolm Holcombe\, John McCusker\, Allison Moorer\, Jessie Alexander\, Randy Travis… \nBen Danaher – For singer/songwriter Ben Danaher\, carrying on a family tradition of storytelling has often led him  down darkened roads to haunting\, painful reflection on his journey thus far. But Danaher is no longer standing in the shadows. The Texas native is back in a glorious new season of self-reflection with a brand new\, astute and sincere lease on life and love. This is Ben’s third year at Antlers & Acorns.
