This Week
Crews returned to Howard Street Monday morning and began by tidying up the first section of roadway where work has been concentrated in recent weeks. At the same time, crews are partnering with our Public Utilities team on the installation of a new water service line in the area. At this time, no water outages are anticipated, as this work involves the installation of a new service rather than modifications to existing service.
As work progresses, crews are beginning to move into the next section of Howard Street. This phase extends from roughly the midpoint of the ECRS parking lot, where the first section ended, to just past the Town Hall parking lot.
As construction moves into this area, both the King Street Parking Lot and Town Hall Parking Lot are experiencing temporary traffic pattern changes. The exits for both lots are closed due to construction activities, and motorists will need to exit through the entrance. We recognize this is not ideal and appreciate everyone’s patience as work continues. Town staff have installed additional signage in both lots to help drivers and pedestrians safely navigate these changes.
With Boonerang taking place this week, it’s worth noting that the Town Hall lot is primarily used by event volunteers and staff. While the lot will continue to see significant activity, the traffic pattern will likely differ from a typical day. Cultural Resources has a dedicated parking team assigned to the event that will be monitoring the lot throughout the festival to help guide vehicles safely in and out.

Progress Update
One of the most exciting aspects of this section of the project has been seeing some of the finished hardscape elements begin to take shape. As concrete work continues, we’re getting our first real glimpse of what the completed streetscape will look like. Sidewalks, roadway edges, and other streetscape features are beginning to come together, making it easier to envision how the finished corridor will function and feel.
Behind the scenes, utility work has continued to make significant progress. Ridgelink has completed wire-pulling operations and now has infrastructure installed within the new duct bank. New River Light & Power continues pulling wire as preparations move forward for underground utility service. Representatives from Skyline/SkyBest and Charter have also been on site coordinating and planning their upcoming work within the corridor.
