This Week
Please note: Due to today’s rainy weather, construction activities are delayed on Monday. Crews plan to return tomorrow.
Once work resumes, construction will continue in the area behind the Appalachian Theatre and extend toward Appalachian Street.
This phase will follow a construction sequence similar to the first two phases on this side of the project, beginning with grading work, followed by concrete and hardscape installation, roadbed preparation, and ultimately the placement of the base layer of asphalt.
Last week marked another exciting milestone as crews completed the center phase of construction on this side of Howard Street and transitioned into the next section between the Appalachian Theatre and Appalachian Street. Thank you to everyone for your patience as the work zone shifted.
Crews spent much of last week grading the new section in preparation for concrete work, and by the end of the week had begun installing one of the concrete bands that will define the future roadway.
Perhaps the most exciting development is that crews have now begun installing the pavers that will make up the new hardscape areas. Seeing these materials go into place really helps bring the vision for the finished streetscape to life, and each week the transformation becomes a little easier to imagine.
A Special Reminder
With the King Street and Town Hall parking lots now back open, we anticipate an increase in vehicles exiting onto Howard Street through the construction zone.
As a reminder, what will eventually be a one-way roadway is still temporarily operating as a two-way access road to maintain access during construction. We know it isn’t an ideal traffic pattern, and we appreciate everyone’s patience as work continues.
While it’s exciting to see the new parking stalls and sidewalks taking shape, please do not park in the new parking stalls or on the new sidewalks. Keeping these areas clear gives drivers the space they need to safely navigate the temporary traffic pattern. Even a single vehicle parked in the unfinished area can significantly restrict traffic flow and create challenges for customers, deliveries, service vehicles, and emergency responders moving through the construction zone.
Thank you again for your continued patience, flexibility, and support as we work toward the finish line. Every week brings us one step closer to a beautiful new Howard Street! Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions 828-268-6283.
